ESTJ Definition of Personality Equals “Reality + Logic + Organization”

The definition of personality for the ESTJ includes the natural awareness for current facts, details, reality, and organizes them very pragmatically.

You may have come here from the MBTI “words to describe personality” page and you know or suspicion that your personality type is Extraverted with Sensing, Thinking and Judging, because you have taken the Myers-Briggs personality assessment test. Or you may be here because someone you care about is this type. That being the case you can discover many qualities, traits or characteristics describing this personality type on this page.

BASICS

I’m going to present ESTJ qualities in a list format because I have found reading a paragraph when you are digging for some important, quick information, can be difficult, well it can be irritating! So let us take a look at a list of personality traits for ESTJs. This type:

  • Tends to be very logical and analytical about life
  • Is analytically, realistically, watching everything
  • Is typically adaptable, energetic with a realistic view of things
  • Is naturally very in-the-moment oriented
  • Believes that logic and analysis of the real are most important
  • Can have a very strong natural NEED to organize…everything
  • Is living in order to make a decision; they love to make decisions
  • Would rather be certain and wrong than merely uncertain
  • Has extremely clear, certain view of what is right and wrong
  • Will openly critique anyone, not to hurt, but to make right, and organize
  • Willingly and naturally supervise others

Now do you see yourself/someone else in the above basic list of personality traits??

What we really begin to see with personality type is emerging patterns of behaving and using our brains. The ESTJ way is natural, instinctive, beautiful, created to be this way. Let us continue.

Mottos Are Fun

For the ESTJ these mottos or things to put on their battle flag might be: “Everything Will Workout-I’ll See To It!”, “Natural Administrators” “Just Take Care of Business”, to name a few.

Let us make another list of personality traits, ESTJs:

  • Are reasoning and making decisions with logic and data input
  • Are taking a very hands-on approach to everything
  • Will have difficulty (sometimes great difficulty) expressing emotion, feeling
  • Highly value duty and getting the job done….their way
  • Constantly probe for the utility of an idea….what are the useful facts
  • Feel a strong sense of community, institution, authority, power, competence
  • Can be strong willed and tough minded
  • Now, my friend, the ESTJ not only behaves in the above manner…THEY NATURALLY EXPECT EVERYONE ELSE TO DO THE SAME!!

So, what happens when they see that many others do not behave that way?? (only 10-12% of America’s population is this type) Answer: Different levels of stress, confusion, irritation, etc.; typically nothing this type can’t handle. So, this is a NATURAL reaction on the part of this type, they are not doing anything wrong.

    More Stuff The ESTJ:

    • Typically very matter-of-fact in relationship with others
    • In relationships, are confident, direct, tough-minded
    • In relationships, they have a natural tendency to issue directives
    • In relationships, they believe in fair play…by their standards
    • In relationships, they can seem autocratic due to their natural tendency to do things their way
    • In relationships, they can also be or appear to be insensitive to the feelings and emotional needs of relationships
    • Can be very security minded in relationships
    • Naturals for valuing and remembering birthdays, holidays, anniversaries, tradition
    • May rush to judgment rather than cooperatively considering a mates point of view

    Under Stress The ESTJ:

    • May become hypercritical of others and themselves
    • May “feel” attacked, take things personally and feel unappreciated
    • May become angry, issue orders indiscriminately
    • Under extreme stress they may withdraw, feel hurt, trapped and alone, and see one huge concept as the problem
    • May withdraw with out of proportion explosions of emotion

If this type is you, wonderful, perhaps you now have a better understanding of yourself, and perhaps you can use that increased understanding in many positive ways.

If you see someone else as this type but not you, please pay attention to the differences between your personality and the ESTJ. Try to see that your way and this way are natural and just fine! Look for the positive differences, the strengths this type brings to your type. Celebrate that because it cannot be changed and can add wonderful diversity and truth to your life!!
