Management ISTJ Style is Decisive and Authoritarian!

Management ISTJ Style

The ISTJ management style is direct, focused, realistic and one that understands rules and procedures.

The ISTJ Myers-Briggs personality type instinctively understands the chain of command and will expect others to understand it as well.

The overall management style of the ISTJ is predictable and formal; creating a steady trusted atmosphere….you can count on the ISTJ manager! They will do what they say!

Naturally loyal to their organization or institution, they will expect others to express the same loyalty. By the way the ISTJ is naturally loyal to family, friends, clubs, churches…you name it the ISTJ, once committed to it, will be loyal to the end!

Being efficient is a natural drive for this management style and the ISTJ manager will want things to be done on time and on schedule.

The basic ISTJ nature is grounded, stable, realistic, in-the-moment and their style of leading and managing others is the same.

As a leader and manager the ISTJ will do what they say; they will follow through even to the extent of working from dawn to dusk…..if that is what is needed for the good of the order!

The ISTJ are life’s natural administrators and as such accept responsibility well and often. They will more easily hold themselves accountable than some others and are extremely trustworthy.

The ISTJ does not need “flourish”, display and will not typically make a big deal out of anything. They are steady, loyal, dependable, dedicated workers, leaders and managers.

The feedback given to workers by the ISTJ leader will be more naturally focused on detailed, logical things not getting done rather than praise for what has been accomplished.

All of the above management style traits and characteristics the ISTJ will expect others to share and display! Of course not everyone else will because not everyone shares the ISTJ nature. So when discrepancies and behavioral differences are encountered, knowledge of Myers-Briggs personality type can help us to reframe in the direction of the difference rather than trying to force a change when forced personality change is impossible!!

So the Myers-Briggs can be a very valuable managerial personality testing tool!

Consequences of ISTJ Management Style

Normally workers will know exactly what is expected of them as a result of being led by the ISTJ.

Sometimes, actually very often, the ISTJ style will be experienced as one that does not care much for the individual or how people feel. Actually, the ISTJ cares greatly for others but has instinctive difficulty expressing it.

As a result the ISTJ may need formal training/coaching in order to praise others for doing their jobs well.

Sometime the ISTJ will be experienced as controlling, critical and very no-nonsense in their actions and in their feedback to others.

If anything is seen by the ISTJ as a threat to the “normal” working of things, they will resist it and question the change or the threat in great detail in order to understand it.

The ISTJ leader can become impatient with workers who are not as steady and predictable as the ISTJ is. Here again using the managerial personality testing tool the Myers-Briggs is can aid the ISTJ in identifying those types among the 16 that are more likely to be impatient with the “steady pace” approach to getting work done that the ISTJ naturally embraces.

The ISTJ will also become irritated with other types who have a natural tendency to not follow through and complete what they begin.

Change for change sake will be challenged by the ISTJ leader.

The work environment will be organized, neat, clean and efficient….at all costs!

These are just some of the leadership and management traits and characteristics of this Myers-Briggs personality type.
