College Life ISTJ is Focused, Realistic and Stressful!
There is so much to college life ISTJ, but nothing the ISTJ (Introverted withSensing, Thinking and Judging) cannot deal withand thrive in. So much of collge is "conceptual" that will be the major area ofpotential conflict with the ISTJ makeup. What To Study
Formal career planning aside, the ISTJ will by nature accumulate as many factsas they can before deciding upon any "major" field of study. Facts about anything andeverything related to their career goals. They will typically gravitate toward college majors and minors such as: - Accounting
- Finance
- Business
- Law
- Administration
- Civil Engineering
- Production
- Construction
- Health Administration
Studying and Learning Styles
The ISTJ college student will normally be very good a managing their time. And thisis the number one cause of poor college performance, the inability of the studentto manage so much free time. In addition, the ISTJ student will need alot of alone time to study, because they prefer "Introversion" as their prime source of energy. They are typically avid readers and masters of the facts regarding what ever theystudy. They are also "sequential" learners....things must flow in order and in sequence ifoptimal learning is to take place. While reading and writing they will: - Need alone time as mentioned above.
- Write drafts first from a outline.
- The outline will be very factual.
- Will revise first drafts by adding concepts later.
- Will rely upon proven past learned methods of writing.
- May bring a perfectionist approch to writing that can hinder.
Fun and Stress
College is known as a time of "fun" in addition to a time and place of advanced learning. The ISTJ will approch the idea of fun secondarily. Work and learning, especially if seen as work, must get done first BEFOREany play is engaged in. In addition, the ISTJ: - Prefers more "hands-on" fun, projects & hobbies.
- Will usually not date much if at all because they are too busy.
- Will prefer roomates to be neat, quiet, organized.
Indeed identifying early any "personality" differences between the ISTJ andthier roomate(s) can enable the ISTJ to better identify and clarify issues such asstudy time, orderliness, room guests, and other personal boundries. Roomate stress is a large stressor for most students living on-campus.Much stress can be averted when potential roomates can be typed early on andpotential differences taken into consideration by all parties. College ISTJ stress may stem from the follow sources: - What worked in High Scool will probably not work now.
- The ISTJ tends to overlook long-range planning.
- Can be too perfectionistic.
- May overlook and indeed miss out on college fun.
- They make work so hard their health suffers.
The ISTJ can deal with college stress by leading with their strengths and considering the "details" involved with potential stressor's. They can alsoplan fun time, down time, learn to moderate the more perfectionist tendencies. In addition, they can learn that college is much, much more "conceptual" than High School was and this can be factored into their learning goals. They can learnto practice more "conceptual" approaches to college life. It is estimated that as much as 40% of all college students are "SJ"; SensingJudgers...as are ISTJs. So college can be a wonderful time for the ISTJ as indeed itcan be for any of the 16 Myers Briggs types. The college experience can be optimized for the ISTJ by understanding better theirnatural tendencies for learning styles, picking college majors, preferences forcollege fun and much, much more!
